Abstract

Social media as emerging phenomena has not been investigated as an efficient tool for project communication management in the literature. To address the gap of existing studies, this research aims to analyze the data gathered from construction project managers as well as project team members whose job relates to project management and use social media tools as communication channels in their projects. The results show that social media improve project communication by better idea transfer using audio and video messages, faster data accessibility, and more effective and efficient project documentation. To enhance their positive impacts on project communication, the research suggest that the project managers may use tools that are specifically developed for project management, or they may at least create specific groups for project teams in social media. Although, the positive impacts are shown to be significant, there are still some challenges ahead that require attention, such as the mixed private and working relationships caused by overusing such tools in nonworking times.
